The zona pellucida is a glycoprotein layer surrounding the exterior of the oocyte and plays a crucial role in the fertilization process. The sperm binds to the zona pellucida, triggering the acrosome reaction and fusing with the oocyte. In assisted reproductive technologies, the thinning of the zona pellucida through laser (assisted hatching) can be applied to improve embryo implantation rates.
