Editör: Prof.Dr. Berna DİLBAZ

ADOLESCENT GYNECOLOGY (TR)
BookDocumentEducation

As the “Contraception and Reproductive Health Association,” we aimed to create a guidebook that would be useful in the daily practice of various professional groups, including family doctors, obstetricians and gynecologists, pediatricians, and reproductive health workers.

Prof.Dr. Haldun Güner

Honorary Founding President of the Contraception and Reproductive Health Association.

This book, prepared under the title “Adolescent Gynecology,” comprehensively addresses common gynecological and obstetric problems in adolescents, as well as the psychological changes in adolescence. The experts in the field have prioritized practical applications in their approach. We would like to express our gratitude to the valuable authors of this book for their scientific contributions in supporting this work.

Prof.Dr. Berna Dilbaz

President of the Board of Directors of the Contraception and Reproductive Health Association

PREFACE

Adolescence is an exciting and somewhat painful process of change that begins with the physical phase of puberty, progresses differently for boys and girls, develops secondary sexual characteristics, increases hormonal activity, and marks the acquisition of reproductive ability, all accompanied by emotional fluctuations as physical growth takes place. According to UNESCO’s definition, it is a developmental period in which a person is not yet economically independent due to their studies and efforts to make a living and is not married.

Currently, around 1.3 billion adolescents worldwide are trying to complete their physical, social, and psychological development and prepare to enter adulthood. Turkey’s population is reported by TÜİK as 83 million 154 thousand 997. According to the latest results of the Turkey Demographic and Health Survey (TNSA2018), 25% of the population is under 15, and 16% is between the ages of 15 and 24. In Turkey, approximately 4% of women in the adolescent period (15-19 age group) are either already mothers or pregnant with their first child. As education level and socio-economic status improve, adolescent pregnancy rates decrease. The primary reproductive health problems experienced include unintended and/or unwanted pregnancies, where a girl who has not yet fully completed her physical and psychological development faces a more risky pregnancy period for both her and the baby’s health. Other issues include exposure to sexually transmitted infections and diseases without sufficient information, and many cases of sexual and physical violence. Early motherhood hinders the education and social development of the adolescent mother. The emotional fluctuations and risk-taking behaviors commonly observed in the psychological development process put adolescents at risk of health-threatening dangers such as substance addiction and suicide.

As the Contraception and Reproductive Health Association, this book prepared under the title “Adolescent Gynecology” comprehensively addresses the physiological changes occurring from puberty to adulthood, common gynecological and obstetric problems, psychological changes in adolescents, and the issues faced, with a focus on practical applications by specialists in the field. Our goal was to create a guidebook that could be utilized in the daily practices of family physicians, obstetricians and gynecologists, pediatricians, reproductive health workers, and many other professionals. To achieve this, we consulted scientists from various fields. I would like to thank the valuable authors of the book for their scientific contributions. We also extend our thanks to Bayer for their support in this edition of the book.
