Sperm capacitation is the process in which sperm undergoes biochemical and physiological changes necessary for fertilizing an oocyte. This process, which occurs within the female reproductive system, enables the sperm to undergo the acrosome reaction and penetrate the zona pellucida to reach the oocyte. Failure of capacitation can prevent natural conception, and in some infertility treatments, capacitation needs to be induced in a laboratory setting.
