Nonoxynol-9 is a compound with spermicide properties and can be used in conjunction with barrier methods. Found in vaginal foam, gel, or suppository form, nonoxynol-9 works by disrupting the sperm cell membrane. However, frequent use can cause irritation to the vaginal mucosa, increasing susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Therefore, it is not recommended as a reliable standalone contraceptive method.
